Lawrence, KS Police Department

Hunter Safety Program

The Lawrence Police Department supports the Kansas Hunter Education Program which is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. All persons born after July 1, 1957 are required to pass a Hunter Education Class to hunt. Additionally, parents and siblings who may not be interested in hunting, but who live in a home where firearms are stored, are encouraged to attend. Kansas Hunter Education Certification is reciprocal with all 50 states in the United States. There is no fee for the class.

A new law effective January 1, 2005 establishes a minimum age for the class at 12 years of age. However, other changes in the law make it possible for children under 12 to hunt under certain conditions. Persons with questions should consult the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks website for guidance on hunting regulation.

The Douglas County Area Coordinator for the Hunter Education Program is Captain Dan Affalter of the Lawrence Police Department. The classes are funded by the Fraternal Order of Police, Lawrence Lodge #2, The National Wild Turkey Federation and the Jayhawk Chapter of Quail Unlimited. There are usually four to five classes offered each year: four in the fall and one in the spring. Exact dates will be posted each year approximately one month before classes begin (February and August). Once the dates are posted, you may sign up for any of the classes at Hack's Outfitters (formerly Lunker's Bait and Tackle), The Plaza Barber Shop, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, or call the Lawrence Police Department. Attendance at the earliest opportunity is encouraged due to limited class size.

Individuals requiring more information may go to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks web site at www.kdwp.state.ks.us. A voice mailbox has been setup to take registration for classes but is only monitored during enrollment periods. The number for the registration voice mailbox is 785-832-3288.
